Naming agency in India: how we name brands, and the names we have given
From High & Dry to LINAÉ and Telugu Medium: how a brand naming studio in Hyderabad finds names that work across India.

A name is the one piece of branding you will say every day, for free, for as long as the business exists. It goes on the sign, the invoice, the app store listing and the trademark certificate. It is also the hardest thing to change later. That is why more founders now look for a naming agency before they look for a logo.
We are Blueowl, a brand naming and identity studio in Hyderabad, working since 2016 with founders across India and abroad. Naming is where many of our brands begin. Here is how we approach it, the names we have given, and what to look for in any brand naming agency in India.
What a naming agency actually does
A good naming agency does not hand you a list of clever words. It gives you a name that is distinctive, easy to say in more than one language, available to register, and true to the business, with the thinking that proves it. The name is not the end of a brainstorm. It is the first decision of the brand.
That means the work starts long before the first suggestion: the customer, the category, the competitors and the founder's own story, which is often where the best name is hiding.
Names we have given
High & Dry, a luxury aftercare studio for sneakers, shoes and bags in Hyderabad. A phrase that describes how every pair leaves the studio, and a promise of being looked after.
LINAÉ, a dermatology clinic run by two doctors, named after the twinflower, *Linnaea borealis*, whose blossoms always grow in pairs.
Telugu Medium, a restaurant for Telugu home cooking, named as a medium to the food and after the phrase every generation of Telugu-medium students owns.

House of Pops, a popsicle brand we named in 2016 and have built ever since. First Pour, a café coming up inside Between the Brewery, named for the first thing poured every morning: coffee. Five Little Tales, a preschool named for the five little years before big school. Hy~One, a convention centre built for large weddings. Rüya, a couture label. O Fam, a farm-to-kitchen meat and eggs brand. And for Telluris Biotech, two agri products, Kheth Rakshak and Nema Fasak, named so a farmer can say them once and ask for them at the counter.
Every one of these names was found inside the business before it was invented outside it.
Every great name was found inside the business first.
How we name a brand
Discover. We start with the founder, the customer and the category: what the business promises, who it is for and what every competitor is already called.
Territories. Before any names, we agree on directions: a feeling, a place, a technique, a story, a coined word. Founders choose the territory, not just the word.
Long list to short list. Hundreds of candidates, filtered hard for meaning, sound and fit, until a handful remain.
Screening. Each shortlisted name is checked against a Google search, Indian trademark records in the relevant classes, domains and social handles, and its meaning in the languages your customers speak.
Presentation with a story. Every final name comes with the reasoning behind it, how it sounds, how it looks set in type and where it can grow.

Naming for India, not just in English
India adds a layer most naming guides ignore. A name may be read in English, spoken in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi or Hindi, and typed into a search bar by someone who has only heard it once. We test names aloud, check what they mean across languages, and avoid spellings that people can't type from memory. In India, a name has to survive a phone call, a WhatsApp forward and a shop sign, often on the same day.
What to look for in a brand naming agency
A portfolio of names, not just logos. Ask which names the agency created, not only designed.
A process with screening built in. Trademark and availability checks should happen before you fall in love with a name.
Reasons you can repeat. You will explain your name to investors, staff and customers for years. The agency should give you that story.
Naming and identity in one place. A name and its identity are designed together; splitting them often means starting again.
Working with founders across India
Our studio is in Hyderabad, but naming does not need a shared city. We have built brands for founders in Mumbai, in the US and in New Zealand, all on calls and shared boards. Whether you are in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai or Delhi, the process is the same. If you are looking for a naming agency in Hyderabad or anywhere in India, start with our checklist of seven checks before you finalise a brand name, read how to name your startup, or see the names and brands we have built.
